Clinical Research Report

Study Conducted by:
Occupational Therapy Institute for Rehabilitation Research and Development

The Rehabilitation Centre
505 Smyth Rd, Ottawa
ON K1H 8M2 Canada

In 1996, we took the Uplift Seat Assist to the Occupational Therapy Institute for Rehabilitation Research and Development for clinical testing. The results of the limited trials found that the Uplift Seat Assist:

  • Worked very well on chesterfields and soft chairs;
  • Worked optimally for clients with normal or low muscle tone;
  • Worked well for clients with some degenerating conditions before muscle tone decreased too much;
  • Was not found to be useful with spastic, quadriplegic clients, and those with high muscle tone;
  • Was very useful for clients with lower extremity weakness and/or upper extremity weakness;
  • Was safe when used on a stable base, or on a chesterfield beside one arm rest, and also on a soft armchair;
  • Was safe to use in a wheelchair as long as the wheels were securely locked.

Customer Survey Results

Study Conducted by:
The Research Department Inc.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

In August 1999, Uplift Technologies employed the Research Department Inc. to undertake the Uplift Seat Assist Usage and Attitude Survey in order to determine customer satisfaction as well as user habits and attitudes toward the product.

The study reflects the opinions of a representative sample of customers who have returned their warranty card (257 surveys selected randomly from 1200 warranty cards for an overall sampling error of plus or minus 5.5% in 19 out of 20 samples). It shows an extremely high degree of customer satisfaction – well above the average for most products. Below are listed some of the significant research results.

Major Research Finding:
Nine out of ten customers, are satisfied with the Uplift Seat Assist, and appreciate the value they received for the price they paid.

Other Important Findings:
  • When asked what they liked about the Uplift Seat Assist, the majority of customers said its "effectiveness" (i.e., it lifts me out of my chair) and its "ease of use" were the most important benefits.
  • Customers like their Uplift so much almost all of them recommend it to a friend.
  • Nearly seven in ten customers use Uplift to help them with arthritis-related conditions.
  • The vast majority of Uplift users (84%) live in their own home and remain independent. Over 80% of Uplift customers use their Uplift frequently, and most of these, daily.
  • Most customers find Uplift easy to use (85%), with over half saying it is "extremely" easy to use.
  • Almost all (92%) of customers reviewed the instructions and found them easy to understand.
  • A strong majority (85%) are satisfied with the quality of the Uplift Seat Assist.
  • The majority are also satisfied with the value they receive for the price they paid for the Uplift.
  • The people who use the Uplift Seat Assist the most are most likely to be completely satisfied and find it easy to use.
