Standing
Up Without Help
An
Electric Lifting Cushion to Go
The
older female patient suddenly screamed in pain. The physician’s
office nurse had simply helped her rise out of a low chair.
She had torn the patient’s rotator cuff, not knowing that
this patient was suffering from arthritis and susceptible
to injury.
“I
witnessed this incident myself,” explains Cathy Donald , PT,
who specializes in homecare and geriatrics in both FL and
Nova Scotia . “The simple act of standing up from a seated
position can be difficult and dangerous for people with arthritis,
paralysis, upper body weakness, Parkinson’s or Multiple Sclerosis.
“During
the past few months, I have watched several of my senior patients
regain their independence by using Uplift’s electric lifting
cushion. They no longer have to rely on a family member or
caregiver to help get them up out of a chair. And by not wearing
themselves out in the struggle to get up on their own, they
have more energy to walk around.”
“Now
I stand the first time I get up,” Rex Stevens says proudly.
Stevens, one of Donald’s physical therapy patients, has diabetic
neuropathy and suffers from muscular weakness in his legs
and arms. “When I use the Power Seat I can stand up on my
own from my favorite comfortable chair or from chairs without
arms.”
Stevens
needs help in transitioning from sitting to standing. The
electric Power Seat ensures that he always stands safely on
his first try – and that once standing he still has strength
for walking. When he feels energetic and wants to give his
legs more of a workout, he simply stops the Power Seat halfway
up and finishes standing on his own.
For
some people, using a manual lifting seat has been too hard
to control and pushes them too high too quickly. They are
actually forced to slide off the seat before they can stand.
This electric lifting cushion can be raised by simply depressing
a lever and stopped at whatever height the user needs to simply
stand up on their own physical power.
“Sometimes
going home to visit family can become a dreaded experience,”
adds Donald. “Families will not have a lift chair or high
seat, so their aging parents don’t want to go visit because
they know they will become stuck on a low sofa and need help
to get up. With this portable Uplift Power Seat cushion, they
can get up on their own and not worry about being embarrassed.”
Staying
independent is our most important value, according to AARP’s
new study, “A Report to the Nation on Independent Living and
Disability.” Seniors with disabilities fear losing their independence
and mobility, desperately wanting control over how they live
daily. Uplift’s Power Seat is one tool that enables them to
remain mobile and stay in control.
