Uplift's Day-Lights Selected For Use in
Three Year CAN-SAD Study
October
1, 2000
DARTMOUTH,
N.S. - Uplift Technologies Inc., manufacturer of
light therapy systems for the treatment of Seasonal Affective
Disorder (SAD), announced today that their Day-Light 10,000
Classic lux light boxes were chosen by leading researchers
for a 3-year study, to compare the efficacy of light therapy
treatment to antidepressant medication. This is the largest
study of its kind ever undertaken on the treatment of SAD.
This three-year, 210-person controlled study is the first
of its kind to test both light therapy and antidepressants
being used simultaneously. Dr. Lam, the principal investigator
of this CAN-SAD study states that "many studies show
that light therapy is effective for SAD, and that antidepressant
medications are also effective. But there are no good studies
where both light therapy and antidepressants are used."
Dr. Lam is a Professor of Psychiatry and Head of the Division
of Mood Disorders at UBC and has authored over 130 scientific
articles and book chapters in the areas of seasonal and atypical
depression, light therapy, and psychopharmacology.
Uplift's Day-Lights are recommended by Doctors all over the
country. They have been used in clinical studies across North
America since 1989 and have been proven safe and effective.
Dr. Lam said he chose Day-Lights because "they use the
latest technology, are of excellent quality, durability and
aesthetics, and meet all recommended safety standards. The
company also has a track record of dependability."
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a subtype of major depression
that is characterized by onset at a certain time of year,
usually the winter. In North America, conservative estimates
indicate that almost four million people suffer from SAD and
over 30 million more experience its "subsyndromal"
variation known as "the winter blues."
Today Uplift Technologies
Inc. is a dynamic, growing company whose mission is to improve
the well-being of people with challenging health conditions
through the provision of innovative technologies. Current
product lines include two models of Day-Lights, as well as
a family of specialty seating products that evolved out of
a portable lifting cushion called the Uplift Seat Assist.
These products are sold throughout the USA and Canada, as
well as internationally.
